FINAL WORDS

And so we end this story on a whimper rather than a bang, 31 years from the time when the church authorities were thinking of the spiritual needs of people who were not even in the district. Would they have so much foresight today?

On a personal note, this history has taken far longer to compile than intended, for which I apologise. The first foray into the records took place on the 10 February 2006, but the last 2 years have been turbulent times and I was abroad for a greater proportion of them. Perversely now that the work is finished I contemplate watching the grass grow. I have learned to spell "diocesan" and my friend Saumarez-Smith has given my z key far more use than it is accustomed to. Incidentally I think he retired in 1958

Finally I leave you with this picture of St Marks as it is now, March 2008. In the mid 70's a "proper" church was built, using prefabricated construction. The original "Dual Purpose Church/Hall" is barely visible as the brick built building behind the Church. It is largely unaltered from the time it was built, apart from the chancel being removed with the building of the Church. All Saints, the true parish church, is a listed building and still in use.
