CHRISTIAN AID 2008
Christian Aid is an agency of the Churches in the U.K. and Ireland. They work wherever the need is greatest - irrespective of religion or race.
Christian Aid Week this year commenced on the 12th May concluding on the 18th and once again I am indebted to our splendid group of helpers who helped raise £1656.06 for this cause. The highlight of the week was the "Sing for your Supper" evening held on the 13th May which attracted 56 people. It commenced with Community Hymn singing in the Church, led by Choirmaster Ralph Hebditch, and was followed by a talk, aided by a screen given by Stephen Dominy, a Volunteer development Officer from the Southampton Office of Christian Aid. He was able to talk first hand of his knowledge of work in both Bangladesh and Indonesia, and the challenge facing partners of Christian Aid anxious to see improvements. It is hard going and the degree of poverty is high. Educational standards are low and in some cases non-existent. He also gave us a short quiz testing our knowledge on Christian Aid in general.
Afterward we sat down to an excellent meal provided by Sarah and Chris Watson and helpers. I must thank Val Hebditch for all her help in setting up the tables and general organisation. I would also like to thank Garnet Lambert for again providing drinks and wine. In all, an excellent evening and our Rector Charles was most appreciative and warmly thanked all those involved. To conclude I would like to make a further appeal for more helpers. We are at present about 5 helpers short to cover the area. If any Member of our Congregation feels they could help by simply putting envelopes through doors, adding a small slip of paper, stating when they would call back, and then after collection return to the Church. It is all quite simple. If you are interested please give me a call on 893353.
Many thanks
