The day appointed for our walk, 13th September, couldn't have been a better one for walkers, clear, sunny and not too hot. Mavis and Bob had walked our route for us the previous day to make sure there were no insuperable hurdles so Muriel and Frank, Phyllis and Philip and I met our 2 leaders at Chettle to start our walk. We visited three churches, Chettle, Tarrant Hinton and Tarrant Gunville, all in beautiful little villages with well-tended gardens. The first two, Chettle and Tarrant Hinton, are attractively built in alternate bands of knapped flint and sandstone. Tarrant Hinton church is one of few churches that has an Easter sepulchre. This was built in 1520, but unfortunately most of the figures that originally featured in the sculpture no longer exist. We weren't able to go into the village church at Tarrant Gunville because of a wedding taking place, so we just signed the visitors' register and then went along to their impressive new Millennium Village Hall and on up into the Sports field, where we had lunch sitting on the new seats and admiring the children's playground, tennis court and scenery. We all enjoyed our day out in very attractive surroundings. We covered about six miles and were able to stay on footpaths for most of the way. We are very grateful to our sponsors for their generous support and are pleased to report that the total sum raised was £332.50., half of which will go to our own historic church. |
